Rupprecht Geiger

The German abstract painter and sculptor Rupprecht Geiger (German, 1908 - 2009) was the son of the painter Willi Geiger. In 1929 Rupprecht Geiger completed his architecture studies at the art school in Munich before he continued studying at the state building school. After his studies and until 1962 he worked in various architecture bureaus. Meanwhile he started painting and between 1943 and 1944 he was employed as a war painter before he became Professor for painting at the state art academy in Düsseldorf. Geiger accomplished his life work around the theme “color” in reduced and clear compositions. Geiger exhibited widely at the documenta in Kassel, as well as at the Biennial in Sao Paolo. In 2008 he had two large retrospectives in the Lenbachhaus in Munich and at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Moreover, he was awarded numerous European prizes.
