Alexander Calder was one of the great innovators of modern sculpture. He became best known for his mobiles: abstract sculptures whose carefully balanced forms continually shift in response to air and movement. He also created monumental stationary sculptures known as stabiles.
Through his combination of colour, movement and space, Calder gave sculpture an entirely new direction. Alongside sculpture he also produced drawings, gouaches and prints. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is held in the collections of virtually every major museum of modern art.
