Charles Hinman was an American artist and a pioneer of the three-dimensional shaped canvas. From the 1960s onwards he stretched canvas over self-built wooden constructions, causing his paintings to project physically from the wall. Through geometric forms, colour, light and shadow, he blurred the boundary between painting and sculpture.
Hinman was part of the innovative New York art scene of the 1960s and exhibited alongside artists including Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and Carl Andre. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
