Christian Roeckenschuss was an important figure in German Minimalism and Constructive Art. Inspired by Bauhaus and De Stijl, from the 1950s onwards he developed a rigorous geometric language of squares, circles and fields of colour. During his career he was in contact with artists including Hans Arp, Antoine Pevsner and Lucio Fontana.
Roeckenschuss explored colour, light, movement and optical space, bringing his work into dialogue with Op Art and ZERO. His long-running series Séquences Chromatiques became particularly characteristic of his oeuvre. His importance to post-war German Minimalism was later highlighted through exhibitions by the Daimler Art Collection and the retrospective Minimalism Germany 1960.
