George Segal

George Segal was one of the most important American sculptors of the twentieth century and is closely associated with Pop Art. He became known for his life-size plaster figures placed in everyday settings. His still, white figures became one of the most recognisable visual languages of post-war American art.
Segal was part of the New York avant-garde around Allan Kaprow, John Cage and Merce Cunningham and exhibited alongside artists including Donald Judd and Robert Morris. His work has been shown at major institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
