Helen Vergouwen makes sculptures that often originate in floor plans of houses, cities and places she has visited. Memories of a place are reduced to forms and lines and given a new, tangible presence in wood, bronze and corten steel.
Her work is geometric and abstract, but does not arise from a strict mathematical system. Vergouwen works intuitively and plays with opposites: open and closed, rough and smooth, inside and outside. Material is at least as important as form. The qualities of wood, bronze and especially corten steel remain visible and become part of the work.
Vergouwen studied at St. Joost Academy in Breda. She lives in France and works in both the Netherlands and France. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Stedelijk Museum Breda, Musée de Châteauroux and exhibitions in Paris, Madrid, Budapest and Moscow. In 2025 she took part in the ARTZuid sculpture exhibition in Amsterdam.
Her work is held in collections including the CIAC Centre International d'Art Contemporain de Carros in Nice, MAGI ’900 in Bologna and the Gorcums Museum.
