Jean Arp was a French-German artist and poet and one of the founders of Dada. He was involved in the emergence of Dada in Zurich and later also moved in Surrealist and abstract circles. In his work he sought organic, simplified forms that evoke people, plants and other shapes from nature.
Arp worked in sculpture, relief, collage, drawing and printmaking. Chance played an important role, as in his celebrated collages in which he dropped elements and used the resulting composition. His flowing, biomorphic language made him an important innovator of modern art.
