Jef Verheyen was a Belgian artist who played an important role in the European ZERO movement. In the late 1950s he came into contact with artists including Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and Günther Uecker. In Belgium he co-founded G58 and became an important link between ZERO and the Belgian avant-garde.
In his paintings Verheyen primarily explored light, colour and space. He sought a form of painting in which colour almost detaches itself from the surface, creating a sense of light and infinity. From the 1960s onwards he took part in various international ZERO exhibitions.
