Kenneth Noland was one of the leading American representatives of Color Field painting. Colour stood at the centre of his work, often applied to unprimed canvas. He became best known for paintings of concentric circles and later developed compositions based on chevrons, stripes and geometric patterns.
Noland studied at Black Mountain College with Josef Albers and was influenced by artists including Helen Frankenthaler. From the 1970s onwards he also worked with shaped canvases. His work achieved international recognition and in 1977 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York organised a major retrospective of his oeuvre.
