Lourdes Castro

1930–2022 , Funchal

Lourdes Castro was a Portuguese artist who became part of the international avant-garde in Paris from the 1950s onwards. Together with René Bértholo she founded the experimental magazine KWY, to which artists including Christo and Jan Voss contributed.

From the 1960s onwards, the shadow became a central theme in her work. Castro worked with silhouettes of people and objects, realised in materials and techniques including acrylic glass, collage and screenprinting. Her prints in particular show how she used simple contours to explore the boundary between presence and absence.
