Sol LeWitt was one of the founders of both Conceptual Art and Minimalism. From the 1960s onwards he developed a radical approach in which the idea behind a work of art, rather than its execution, took centre stage. Using simple geometric forms, grids and mathematical systems, he created sculptures, drawings, prints and his celebrated Wall Drawings.
LeWitt was closely associated with artists including Dan Flavin, Robert Ryman and Robert Mangold. His influence on contemporary art has been considerable; major retrospectives of his work have been held at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
