Theo Niermeijer was a Dutch sculptor, painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He became best known for sculptures made from found and weathered metal, but also produced an extensive body of work on paper. Travels through India, Tibet and China brought him into contact with Chinese and Buddhist philosophy, which became an important influence on his visual language.
Chance, transience and the behaviour of materials play an important role in both his sculptures and drawings. Alongside ink drawings and other works on paper, Niermeijer made his characteristic rust drawings, in which metal, rainwater and paper together formed the image.
