Collection: Allen Jones

Allen Jones (1937, Southampton, UK) is a British artist known for his provocative Pop Art style and controversial depictions of sexuality. A self-described feminist, Jones explores themes of objectification and representation of women, engaging with debates about whether his work celebrates or critiques such imagery.

Jones studied at the Royal College of Art with contemporaries like David Hockney and Peter Phillips but was expelled after a year. Despite this, he participated in the influential 1961 “Young Contemporaries” exhibition, which marked the start of the English Pop Art movement. In the 1960s, Jones moved to New York and began creating fetishistic and erotic art, including his notorious 1970 sculptures—Hat Stand, Table, and Chair—that depict female mannequins in sexually suggestive poses. These works faced significant criticism and protests, reflecting ongoing debates about gender and art.

In the 1980s and 90s, Jones focused on painting and printmaking, and he has recently created large-scale steel sculptures for public spaces, such as Taikoo Place in Hong Kong.
