Collection: Larry Rivers

Larry Rivers (1923, Bronx, NY – 2002, New York, NY) was an American artist whose work seamlessly blended the dynamic brushstrokes of Abstract Expressionism with the imagery of commercial advertising. Often considered a precursor to Pop Art, Rivers distinguished himself through his ironic approach to both his own work and that of others, setting himself apart from the more serious Abstract Expressionists of his time.

Born Yitzroch Loiza Grossberg to Jewish Ukrainian immigrants, he adopted the name Larry Rivers at the age of 17. In the late 1940s, he studied under Hans Hofmann, developing a style that combined naturalistic subjects with loose, expressive brushwork. By the 1970s, Rivers had expanded his artistic repertoire to include airbrushing, stenciling, printmaking, and assemblage, making him a key figure in the vibrant Chelsea Hotel scene and a frequent visitor to Andy Warhol's Factory.

Rivers' impact on the art world was significant, culminating in a major retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 2002, the same year of his passing at the age of 78.
