Collection: Robert Smithson
Robert Smithson (1938, New Jersey - 1973, Texas) is renowned for pioneering Land Art with works like Spiral Jetty (1970), Broken Circle/Spiral Hill (1971), and Amarillo Ramp (1973). His innovative approach shifted contemporary art from galleries to vast landscapes, exploring themes of duality and entropy. Fascinated by industrial and natural settings, Smithson’s "non-sites" juxtaposed organic materials with maps, crates, and mirrors to create a dialogue between nature and culture.
Smithson's writings are compiled in The Writings of Robert Smithson, edited by Nancy Holt and Jack Flam. His work is housed in major institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Dia Art Foundation, MoMA, the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum.
